Speaker Demands for Easy Access of Airport

By Joanita Mbabazi

Members of parliament have called upon the authorities at Entebbe International Airport to aid easy access of facilities by persons with disabilities.

This comes after the Bubulo West MP Rose Mutonyi complained about the ongoing renovations at the airport where she says persons with disabilities are inconvenienced to a point that some places at the airport are totally inaccessible to them.

“We do appreciate the ongoing renovation works at this place but unfortunately no alternative routes have been provided for persons with disabilities to use as it has been and all persons with or without disability have to use stair cases to go to the check points to and fro”. said mutonyi

Implying for persons with luggage whatever the size, the elderly inclusive children the only option they have is use the available stair case route.

Mutonyi has urged the government to set up temporary walk way lanes for persons with disabilities even when renovation is going on to easy accessibility for PWD’s to this place.

The Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa in her response said “the renovations that are on going at the airport are temporary and I’ am in direct contact with the Minister of Transport Aggrey Bagyire to inspect the area immediately to rectify this problem”.

However this did not satisfy MPs like Jack Wamanga Wamai, William Nzoghu who say that Ugandan must follow the same procedures like it’s done in other countries where people with disabilities are handled in a special way at the airports.

Asamo Hellen representing people with disabilities from northern Uganda informed parliament true these services do exist at the airport but for a few selective individuals.

With the Mps demand to provide walkways for persons with disabilities, the deputy speaker Jacob Oulanyah demanded that government should direct the construction company doing renovations at the airport to include walking lanes for persons with disabilities at the airport accessible to all persons with disabilities irrespective of their status.
